Pizhichil Ayurvedic oil bath

Pizhichil is an Ayurvedic oil bath in which a continuous stream of warm herbalised oil is squeezed and massaged over the body. It’s a nourishing treatment with a range of applications, including long-standing muscle and joint pain and stiffness.
pizhichil

This treatment begins by massaging warm herbalised oils into your body to prepare for the Pizhichil.

Pizhichil means ‘to squeeze’ in Malayalam (the language of Kerala in South India). During Pizhichil, warm herbal oil is squeezed over the body in a constant rhythmic stream. The oil is lightly massaged into your body throughout the treatment. Depending on your condition, the oil may be applied over a specific area or over your entire body.

Benefits of Ayurvedic herbal oil

The application of warm herbalised oil plays a major role in Ayurvedic treatment. Herbal oil is used as a transport mechanism to carry herbs into the deeper tissues. When warm herbal oils are applied during treatment, the skin’s pores open, allowing the herbal properties of the oils to penetrate more deeply into the tissues. In Ayurvedic tradition, herbs used in this way are believed to help the body release impurities and support overall balance.
ayurveda droni

Ayurvedic droni

One of the most important tools in Ayurvedic treatments is the treatment table itself. Known as a Droni it is hand-carved from a single piece of medicinal wood (such as the neem tree).

The table’s unique design allows for treatments with an abundance of Ayurvedic herbal oil to be performed. Over time these oils become absorbed by the table, and thus the table itself is part of the healing process.
