Ayurveda for lower back pain

Lower back pain is one of the main reasons people come to our clinic. For some, it is a recent strain. For others, it is a recurring problem that never fully settles, affecting comfort, movement, work, and daily life.

For lower back pain, Ayurveda considers the affected tissues, the type of pain, which doshas may be involved, and how the condition shows up in each person. This may be especially relevant when pain persists, recurs, or is difficult to resolve.

The Ayurvedic view of lower back pain

In Ayurveda, lower back pain is referred to as Kati Shoola. Stiffness or limited movement is understood as Katigraha. Pain that spreads into the buttock or leg may be referred to as Gridhrasi, often compared with sciatica-type pain.

Most cases of lower back pain involve Vata dosha, especially when symptoms include pain, dryness, stiffness, tightness, instability, restricted movement, or recurring flare-ups. In some cases, other factors may also be involved, depending on the nature and duration of the pain.

That is why Ayurveda does not view every case of lower back pain in the same way. Two people may have pain in the same area, but the underlying pattern can differ. An Ayurvedic approach considers not only where the pain is felt, but also whether it is localised or radiating, acute or recurring.

Our approach to lower back pain

We begin with an Ayurvedic consultation to understand the nature of the pain and how the condition presents. We assess the type of pain, the degree of stiffness or restriction, whether it radiates, and which Ayurvedic pattern might be involved.

We’ll explain your lower back pain from an Ayurvedic perspective and outline a plan based on the nature of your pain and how it presents.

Our clinic offers traditional Kerala Ayurvedic therapies selected according to the pattern, stage, and nature of the pain.

If your lower back pain is persistent or recurring, we recommend starting with an Ayurvedic consultation to guide your treatment.
